It’s as though you have gone back to being a child with him—everything is wonder, laughter, and play. It’s the country fairground, fresh-picked strawberries, trips on rental bikes through the park. And then a couple with a baby goes by, and you surprise yourself by suddenly wanting a bit of him and you combined—in other words, a child.

Okay. If you’ve known each other three months, do something that will bring you back to your senses: Go to the birthday party of a friend’s son where fifteen four-year-olds dressed as Spiderman are violently destroying a piñata of fluorescent candy. Have you calmed down now?

On the other hand, if you think this is it, you’re really here to stay and you are really sure he’s the one and this is the time . . . say nothing! When the opportunity arises, put a child in his arms (there must be one you can look after for an afternoon somewhere or other). If his heart melts and he is not embarrassed when you laughingly mention it, be bold enough to try the very cunning, “What if we made a baby? I’d love to see a tiny you.”
